As you tend to your body and support your immune systems, please make sure you’re also nurturing your emotional health. With more time at home we don’t want to underestimate the importance of taking care of our own mental and emotional well-being. You would not be alone if during this unique time you found yourself feeling all sorts of emotions that may or may not be typical for you. Some feel grateful for time off, others feel anxious; some find themselves impatient with family, and naturally many feel concerned. It’s all so understandable given what we are living through right now. Many people don’t have their jobs and commute to occupy their time and the increased family time is an adjustment. Even my dog looked at me the other day as if to say “When are you leaving … I need my nap.”
Relaxation is something we all say we need; yet, when push comes to shove in our busy schedule, it gets bumped from our priority list. As we get caught up with day-to-day life and the many external factors demanding our attention and energy, we put off self-care, relaxation and mindfulness. Although this is in an effort to reduce our to-do list and make room for other priorities, the effects can be damaging to our mental, physical and emotional health. Finding a way to bring ourselves back into balance is essential for reaching optimal wellness.
Six months ago I found myself in a rather unique situation. I was volunteering for a large organization that was going through a significant transition, and many of the people involved had a lot of changing emotions and thoughts regarding the shift that was about to occur. Standing in front of this amazing group of colleagues and mentors during a transition event, I myself had a combination of emotions coursing through my body - joy, uncertainty, excitement, curiosity and anticipation. My focus was to stay centered and in my breath.
As the opening of Alive + Well approaches, our team is getting more and more excited about the benefits our guests will experience as we bring together more health and wellness services - and a broader team of interconnected practitioners - under one roof. While each person will experience Alive + Well differently, our team shares our perspectives regarding this new wellness community to give you a peek into our vision for what’s to come.
Erika (name changed for confidentiality) had been suffering from severe, debilitating monthly migraines. They were part of the physical torment that originally brought her into my office. She was tired of medications, and although some supplements and nutrition changes had helped, she still suffered. Being dedicated to holistic health, she intuited that the next step in her healing journey was to explore the potential mental and emotional components that could be contributing to the migraines.
