Do I Need A Health Coach?

I get this question a lot.

Patient: “I think I know what to do to be healthy, but it seems like no matter what I do, I don’t feel any better in the long-run. Why do I keep failing?”

My Response: “Unfortunately, you haven’t been equipped with the right kind of support.  While it certainly requires your commitment to a process, here’s what I do as a health coach that can help you live a healthier life…”

As a Health Coach at Alive + Well, I help:

Empower patients with the knowledge and resources to take control of their own healthcare.

Support patients with guidance and accountability along their health journey

Restore faith in the human body to heal naturally

Sustain long-term outcomes of healthy living with lasting change

Our philosophy is centered around helping put you in control. You should be an active participant in your own health care, not a passive observer.

We’re here to help:

  • collaborate with you and your practitioner to establish goals
  • create a plan to work towards goals at a pace that is comfortable and achievable
  • focus on what it means to feel good in life

Change is hard. You shouldn’t do it alone.

The Gap

Have you ever left your annual check-up wondering “where do I go from here?” You have specific health concerns and don’t feel at your best, but the only advice you have is to exercise more, eat healthier and take your medicine.

Do you ever feel like:

  • 7 minutes with your doctor every few months isn’t enough support?
  • You know what you need to do, but for some reason you feel like it’s always “1 step forward and 2 steps back”?
  • You’re so stressed by daily life that changing health habits just seems daunting?

Your doctor may be excellent when it comes to acute care – treating short-term health issues, occasional illness, or an urgent medical condition. They spent years in school and residency learning this form of treatment.

You, on the other hand, have a chronic issue that can’t be fixed by a pill or procedure. Your issue is lasting and hard to fix. This is the gap in our healthcare system – the point where allopathic medicine can only treat symptoms, without addressing underlying health concerns.

If this sounds familiar, you aren’t alone.

Filling the Gap

Our healthcare system needs practitioners who provide that missing layer:

  • support to help make lasting lifestyle changes
  • emotional support
  • stress management techniques
  • accountability and motivation

At Alive and Well, we help fill this gap by using the functional medicine approach to health coaching.

Functional medicine shifts the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach. This approach allows practitioners to address the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Our style of health coaching leverages knowledge and resources across modalities to support a personalized plan for YOU — not a “one size fits all” model.

Is It Only About Diet and Exercise?

Of course, diet and exercise are critical to optimizing health. But there are many other areas of life that need to be explored, often before diet and exercise can be addressed. A health coach will help identify aspects of your life that are often not considered in a typical health plan, including relationships, stress, environment and sleep.

We help unpack how the details of your life – past and present – are impacting your health. We then provide support with goal setting, progress tracking, education, nutritional alternatives, stress mitigation techniques, community involvement and much more.

Once a plan is in place, we act as an accountability partner to help keep you on track.

Think of a time in your life when you felt your best. What was different then? A health coach can help bridge that gap and identify obstacles on your path toward a healthier life. Learn More Here
